Successful Lecture series by the "Nicos Svoronos" Institute

The Institute for Humanities and Culture "Nicos Svoronos" held a highly engaging lecture event on Monday, 18 November 2024, at the EPLO Plaka premises. The event, titled "Religious Phenomenon and the Public Sphere: Jurisprudential Developments and Practical Illustration," brought together esteemed legal experts and scholars to discuss critical intersections between religion and the public domain.

The lecture series featured the following distinguished speakers:

  • Michael Th. Papageorgiou: Lawyer and Assistant Professor of Constitutional & Administrative Law at the Democritus University of Thrace. His lecture focused on "The Administrative Organization of Churches and Religions in European Constitutional Law," exploring the jurisprudence of the CJEU and ECtHR alongside institutional challenges faced by the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

  • Aikaterini Roxana: Councilor of State, who discussed "The Teaching of Religion in School Education and the Right to Exemption in the Light of the Jurisprudence of the Council of State."

  • George I. Androutsopoulos: Associate Professor of Ecclesiastical Law at NKUA and Lawyer, who delved into "Issues of Administration of Justice in the Semi-Autonomous Church of Crete."

  • Eleni M. Palioura: Lawyer, PhD Candidate of Law at NKUA, and Legal Adviser of the Anglican Church in Greece. Her presentation examined "Ten Years of Validity and Implementation of Law 4301/2014: The Example of the Anglican Church in Greece."

The discussion was expertly moderated by Mrs. Kalliopi (Kelly) Burdara, Emeritus Professor at the University of Athens School of Law (EKPA).

Attendees were treated to a rich dialogue that blended jurisprudential analysis with practical insights, shedding light on the dynamic interplay between religion, law, and society.
