Renowned Academic and Jurist Jean-Pierre Machelon sadly passed away

A renowned academic and jurist, a dear friend of the EPLO, Member of the European Group of Public Law and the EPLO Board of Directors, Professor of public law Jean-Pierre Machelon sadly passed away on October 2 at the age of 77. 

Renowned professor of public law, dean of a large Parisian faculty, the University Paris Descartes Doyen at Versailles, Paris, eminent member of the Superior Council of the Judiciary, president of numerous commissions of reflection, representative of the Holy See to the Council of Europe, it is through his thesis, defended in 1973 and published under the title, La République contre les Libertés? that he enters with brilliance in the university world by posing his vision of the institutions.

He was also director of studies in historical and philological sciences at École pratique des hautes études, where he became chair of the history of European institutions in 1992. From 1992 to 1994, he was a technical advisor for constitutional and legal affairs in the cabinet of Senate President René Monory. From 1994 to 1997, he was Deputy Scientific Director in the Department of Human and Social Sciences at the French National Centre for Scientific Research.

From 2003 to 2005, Machelon was Scientific Director for Social Sciences of the Minister of Higher Education and Research. An expert for the Council of Europe, he chaired the scientific council of the Centre d'études en sciences sociales de la défense. From 2005 to 2006, he chaired the "Machelon commission", which conducted legal reflection on the relations of religions with public authorities and submitted a report to President Nicolas Sarkozy and the Ministry of the Interior on 20 September 2006.Sarkozy appointed Machelon to the Conseil supérieur de la magistrature, where he served from 2011 to 2015.
