Book launch: “The Diplomacy of the Mediterranean” by Sotiris Varouxakis, Deputy Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean

Ambassador Sotiris Varouxakis’ book “The Diplomacy of the Mediterranean”, two years after its Greek edition, is now published in English by the European Public Law Organization (EPLO).

The author, who has deep knowledge of the subject, since representing Greece he had participated in meetings that led in 2008 to the founding of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), to which he serves as a Deputy Secretary General since 2011, presents, describes and analyzes the efforts both openly and behind the scenes of the past 20 years towards the creation of a framework ensuring peace, stability, security and prosperity for the peoples of the Mediterranean. A particularly complex region with a past and a present filled with rivalries, tensions, wars as well as alliances, trade and cultural influences.

The official launch of the book will take place on Thursday, 14 February, at the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) in Barcelona, Spain (Girona 20 st., 19.00). The book will be presented in English by:

  • Fathallah Sijilmassi, Secretary General, Union for the Mediterranean;
  • Senén Florensa, President of the Executive Committee, IEMed;
  • Juan Prat, Head of the Delegation to the European Union, Government of Catalonia;
  • Andreu Bassols, Director General, IEMed;
  • Sotiris Varouxakis, Ambassador, Deputy Secretary General, Union for the Mediterranean.

The speakers are to engage in a debate with the audience on the current state of play of Euro-Mediterranean relations.
