EPLO 's Side Event for the Global Rule of Law Commission at United Nations Headquarters in New York

On November 14, the EPLO hosted a prominent side event at the United Nations Headquarters in New York titled "Feasible Reforms to Strengthen the UN in Support of the Rule of Law." The event was co-sponsored by 18 Member States, showcasing broad international backing. The co-sponsors included Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cape Verde, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Moldova, Mozambique, Portugal, Romania, Thailand, and Ukraine.

The event brought together a distinguished panel of experts and officials Prof. Larry D. Johnson, Former Assistant Secretary-General for Legal Affairs at the United Nations, Ambassador Andreas Mavroyiannis, Facilitator of the 61st UN General Assembly on equitable representation and Security Council reform and, Mr. Miguel Ángel Moratinos, Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, contributed as a participant.

The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Giuliano Amato, President of the Global Rule of Law Commission, former President of the Italian Constitutional Court, and former Prime Minister of Italy. His speech underscored the urgency and feasibility of reforming key UN mechanisms to better uphold and promote the Rule of Law on a global scale.The event was chaired and moderated by Ambassador Barbara Faedda, Permanent Observer of EPLO to the United Nations NYC.

This side event provided a platform for meaningful dialogue and concrete proposals aimed at strengthening the United Nations’ role in advancing legal frameworks that promote peace, justice, and equitable governance.
