The EPLO is deeply saddened by the passing away of Sophia Koukoulis Spiliotopoulos

The EPLO community grieves the loss of Sophia Koukoulis-Spiliotopoulos, member of the European Group of Public Law, attorney and counsellor at law and dear friend of the Organization. Sophia Koukoulis-Spiliotopoulos was a Member of the Greek National Commission for Human Rights (GNCHR) (from March 2003 until her resignation in August 2015) indicated by the Greek League for Women`s Rights. Chair of the GNCHR International Communication and Cooperation Sub-commission (March 2009-July 2015). She was also a Member of the European Network of Legal Experts in gender equality and non-discrimination ,a. Member of the ad hoc Coreper working group which elaborated the Regulation establishing the EU Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA), as an independent expert nominated by the GNCHR (2005-2007), the former vice-president of the Association of Women of Southern Europe (AFEM) and of the European Women Lawyers Association (EWLA). She was the Coordinator of the campaign of AFEM and EWLA in favour of social rights and gender equality in the EU Fundamental Rights Charter and the Lisbon Treaty.

With Numerous publications, among which two monographs, articles, lectures and courses, including at the National School for Judges, the Academy of European Law (ERA, Trier), the M. Stassinopoulos Public Law Foundation, the Franco-Hellenic post-graduate programme of the Thessaloniki University Faculty of Law and the Temple University School of Law (Philadelphia, USA.

The EPLO expresses its sincere condolences and sympathy to her family in this difficult time.
