Scientific Discussion on ChatGTP

The event on "ChatGPT : another tool or "the Genie out of the bottle" was conducted with success on Wednesday, April 5th. by the "Institute for the Law of Privacy, Personal Data Protection and Technology" of the "European Public Law Organization" (EPLO).

The event was greeted by the Executive Director of the "Institute for the Protection of Privacy, Personal Data and Technology" Mr. Nikolas Kanellopoulos who, after conveying the greetings of Professor Spyridon Flogaitis, Director of the EPLO, made brief comments on the issues raised by Artificial Intelligence .

The purpose of the event was to discuss ChatGPT as the "fastest growing consumer application in history" but also to highlight the legal and institutional issues posed by the wide and rapid spread of the use of productive Artificial Intelligence models. Panos Louridas (Associate Professor Department of Administrative Science and Technology at the Athens University of Economics and Business - Director of Research and Development EDYTE) delivered an introductory speech explaining the technological features and uses of these applications. Fereniki Panagopoulou-Koutnatzi (Assistant Professor of Panteion University) referred to the issues of personal data protection and responsibility regarding the use of applications such as ChatGPT. Marina Markellou (Assistant Professor at the Law School of the University of Groningen) highlighted the way in which disruptive technologies such as ChatGPT are reshaping many areas of law and especially intellectual property. Finally, Vassilis Vamvakas (Associate Professor of Sociology of Communication at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) dealt with the issue of the effect of fluidity and information overload on the demands and identities of users of new technologies, referring to the omnipotence of the user-copyist.

A particularly lively discussion followed as many participants as well as the speakers in their responses-deuterologies raised many interesting issues and questions regarding the necessity and difficulties regarding the adoption of rules, value and ethical issues and systems, disinformation as well as the possible effects on the formation of opinions and attitudes and finally on democracy. The event and the discussion that followed was moderated by Mrs. Lilian Mitrou, Professor at the Department of Information and Communication Systems Engineering of the Polytechnic School of the University of the Aegean and President of the Institute for the Law of Protection of Privacy, Personal Data and Technology.
