Migration Summer School 2023: Day 1

c) Metaverse Summer Academy
in the context of Artificial Intelligence and Technology Programs
In collaboration with the International Hellenic University (IHU)
3-8 July 2023
This Summer Academy, co- organized with the International Hellenic University (IHU), took place between 3-8 July
2023 in Thessaloniki at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and aimed to explore the ethical, economic, and
legal challenges we are facing as a consequence of the rapidly evolving technology. The program welcomed
graduate students and PhD researchers from various disciplines such as Philosophy, Law, Computer Science and
provided them with a basic background on the metaverse. The course was also aiming at senior researchers, policy
analysts, lawyers and legal experts, civil servants, members of organizations of civil society, AI practitioners and
other professionals interested in expanding their understanding of AI and its impact on society. Apart from the
lectures, the program also included activities which offered to the participants the opportunity to participate to
various educational/cultural visits, such as in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki.
The program included lectures, case studies, and interactive discussions on the following topics: What is the
Metaverse, Metaverse-Challenges for the Computer Science, Human Rights Challenges in the Metaverse, Virtual
Words/Metaverse, Ethics and EU Policies: Challenges and Opportunities, Intellectual Property and the Metaverse,
Metaverse in Practice.

In this week-long course academics and experts from European and International Universities, Institutes and
research centers participated. More specifically:

- Costis Paikos, Director, Head of Digital, OPAP S.A.
- Chrysostomos Bourlis, Chief Operating Officer and Head of Research & Development, ARX.NET SA.
- Ksenia Ternavskykh, Azure Data Governance Business Lead and Metaverse Expert, Microsoft CEMA.
- Eleni Kosta, Professor of Technology, Tilburg University.
- Mihalis Kritikos, Policy Analyst at the Ethics and Integrity Sector of the European Commission (DG-RTD).
- Michał Czerwiński, IP Specialist, European Union IP Office (EU Agency).
- Georgios Papaprodromou, Police General, former Director of the Cybercrime Division of the Hellenic
Police Headquarters.
