Conference on the Law of the SeaA timely conference on the “Law of the Sea” with the participation of eminentpersonalities from the academic and policy eld took place on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in Athens.The Conference on the topic of “TheLaw of the Sea and the Mediterraneanarea: geopolitical dimension and sub-legal aspects” was co-organized by the European Public Law Organization (EPLO) alongwith the Law School of International Studies Department of the University of Athens and the Department of Political Science andThe human rights after 800 years of Magna Carta“Civil Society and Rights System” was the title of an epistemological and research workshop that wasorganized by the EPLO on Thursday, December 3, 2015 at its premise in Kolonaki, Athens, on the occasion of the completion of 800 years since the entry into force of the Magna Carta. One of the main conclusions of the workshop was the innovative value of the document, signed by King John of England, known as “Lackland”, in 1215 and the in uence exerted on subsequent similar declarations relating to human rights, mainly in the US Declaration of Independence.In addition was expressed a concern that nowadays the “civil society” is under threat as politicians increasingly grants rights to technocrats. Moderator of the discussion was the Professor of political economy at the National and Capodistrian University of Athens, Napoleon Maravegias, Associate Dean at the same University and speakers were:International Relations of the University of Peloponnese.The conference which is also supportedby the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry consisted of three sessions: “The geopolitical dimension and resolution of con icts”, “The geopolitical dimension and individual sub-legal aspects” and “The political dimensions of the Law of the Sea in the Eastern Mediterranean”. Theodoros Georgiou, Professor of political philosophy at the Democritus University of Thrace, Nikoletta Giantsi, Associate Professor of European History at the National and Capodistrian University of Athens, Dimitris Lamprellis, Professor of political philosophy at the Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences and Charis Meletiadis, Professor of history at the Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences.The event was welcomed by the Director of EPLO, Professor Spyridon Flogaitis.ACTIVITY REPORT 2016 127
