Conference on the Economics of EU Competition Law

On Wednesday, 28 February, 2018, the European Public Law Organization (EPLO) organized a Conference on “The Economics of EU Competition Law. Approaches and Challenges of Enforcement in Greece, Bulgaria and Cyprus”, in cooperation with the Hellenic Council of State and Hellenic Competition Commission.

The Conference was opened by Prof. Spyridon Flogaitis, Director of the EPLO, Prof. Panayotis Glavinis, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Prof. Aristeidis Hatzis of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and Mr. Ioannis Symplis, Councilor of State on behalf of the Association of European Competition Law Judges (AECLJ).

During the Conference, representatives of the Judiciaries and the Competition Authorities from Greece, Bulgaria and Cyprus shared their approaches and experiences in applying economic principles when processing and adjudicating EU Competition Law cases at country level. The Conference was organized in two Roundtables respectively chaired by Dimitrios Kyritsakis, President of the Hellenic Competition Commission, and Ms. Irene Mary Sharpe, Vice President of the Hellenic Council of State. The event was attended by over 80 judges, prosecutors, officials of Competition Authorities, academics and legal practitioners.

The Conference followed a two-day Joint Workshop in which a selected group of judges and representatives of Competition Authorities from Greece, Bulgaria and Cyprus, worked on case studies and discussed key issues in applying economic techniques in the enforcement of EU Competition Law.

The Conference and Joint Workshop constituted the final events of the 15-month Project “Advanced Training of National Judges and Prosecutors from Bulgaria, Cyprus and Greece on Enforcement of EU Competition Law”, funded by the European Commission - Directorate-General for Competition, and implemented by the EPLO in partnership with the Law Faculty of Sofia University, Hellenic Council of State, Hellenic Competition Commission, Commission for the Protection of Competition of the Republic of Cyprus, and Commission on the Protection of Competition of Bulgaria. The Project involved 3 Training Programs in Athens, Sofia and Nicosia, attended by over 70 judges and prosecutors. For more information on the Project see http://judgestraining.eu
